A short explanation of the different sorts of exchanges
There are a LOT more options than just these. please check out:
www.coinhills.com/market/ * https://exchangewar.info/
Members who have used an exchange have helpfully offered to have their names listed by them for help. But always just ask anyone, we are all contantly learning more.
Exchanges are phished and attacked constantly so use bookmarks; double check the addresses of all websites, crypto wallets, and emails; and never click random links!
(You can right click and inspect where a link actually goes)
News and Updates – Check the exchange’s official subreddit and Twitter accounts for up to date info

What does a “full exchange” mean? What the heck is an aggregator? some kind of angry reptile?
See below for a brief explanation.
Full Exchange
A Full Exchange provides the platform and is the middle man between buyers and sellers, charging a fee from the transactions. They offer the most volume and more options for trading (lots of trading pairs, limit orders, futures, etc)
Most traditional exchanges are 100% centralized and without oversight, leaving you vulnerable to both manipulation on one end and hackers on the other at the same time.
Binance, GDAX, and all of the larger exchanges are centralized. In these “custodial” exchanges you do NOT own your private keys, so you do NOT own that coin. Don’t “sit” any coin anywhere you don’t own your private keys. If you don’t know what that is please see our other posts or ask 🙂
Exchanges like Coinbase that accept USD are FDIC insured and will require full KYC (Know Your Customer) identification and a lot of time verifying you into higher brackets. (Other exchanges accepting USD transfers currently: Kraken, Bitstamp, Gemini, wallofcoins.com)
Full decentralized exchanges exist wherein the middle man is some sort of smart contract and traders keep a hold of their private keys at all times. They’re preferable for the reasons above but the concerns are, too new/untried (Oasis), small (bisq), or wonky (EtherDelta)
Swap-Exchanges/Brokers/Exchange Aggregators
Similar to exchanging one currency for another at a bank in real life. You take the price they give you but its fast, simple and convenient. They typically do not require the long KYC processes to begin exchanging coins.
Shapeshift and Coinswitch are examples of aggregator applications searching various exchanges for the best rate to swap. Coinbase’s buy BTC/ETH/LTC/BCH offering is essentially a swap for USD as you take the price they give you to get “into” crypto.
P2P and OTC Direct Trading Platforms
Old school markets connect individual traders to one another. Some have smart contracts, some have provisions for escrow and arbitration, most are entirely unsupervised. The most famous and longstanding one of these is localbitcoins.com. Prices are often not pegged to the current coinmarketcap price but at a straight USD to BTC price, read carefully. Sellers can usually choose their rules and operate based on their own strict guidelines and sterling reputations. THIS is the one place you can always sell your BTC at a huge premium… if you dare XD
Cryptocurrency Funds
Pooling into professionally managed assets funds let the public to buy into crypto without ever owning coin. Honestly? Perhaps you should buy stocks. (Choose something that will blast in support of crypto like Nvidia!)
